I started out 30 years ago primarily as a restorer of 18th and 19th Century painted furniture.
The Image above is a detail from a custom-made four-poster bed that I decorated. See bespoke section for more images.
My first works in the eighties come under the sporting scenes section and proved extremely popular with the American market. By the early nineties I had moved over to restoration which I have done ever since.
I started about 30 years ago primarily as a restorer of 18th and 19th Century painted furniture. This has come to me in the past in many forms of disrepair. Often the original decoration has been painted over many times and later layers of paint has to be removed first either by dry stripping using a sharp chisel, scalpel etc or with paint stripper – obviously making sure you get the timing right!
On occasions the original paint has been lost completely or is too far gone; this sadly can mean only a re-paint. This is when I use reference from my extensive portfolio as an aid to replacing what was once there. Currently I am finding myself decorating a great deal of bespoke furniture as clients are happy with items that have the ‘look’ as opposed to the ‘real’ thing as these are quite hard to find nowadays.
